In Memoriam - Past State Deputy Emil Ogden

Ogden

On July 28th, we said a final farewell and God speed to a good friend and inspirational leader, Past State Deputy and Former Vice Supreme Master Emil Ogden of College Station. While many did not have the privilege to know him personally, his presence is continually felt through Texas Knights of Columbus activities and programs, and in those he mentored.

When Emil became State Deputy, at his own expense, he personally visited with every Texas Bishop individually in each diocese, piloting himself in his own plane. Building on this personal touch, the Texas Knights still enjoy a strong and close relationship with our Bishops.

Emil was the driving force behind the establishment of the Cardinal Medeiros Trust with a significant personal contribution. The purpose of the trust is to fund educational grants, and support Catholic schools, and it remains an integral part of the state charities program today.

Emil’s influence on the Order in Texas was strongly evidenced by the number of PSDs attending his services: Tim and Pat Von Dohlen, Ray and Sharon Neumann, Lou and Ceil Barbour, Jacob and Frances Gaona, Ron and Teri Gay, Ken and Linda Otte, Leo Hanus, Larry Zapalac, Tony and Marty Herreth, Jim Collins, and Terry Simonton. Those unable to attend, but sending their deepest regrets were Javier and Marietta Martinez and Douglas Oldmixon and Jo-Dee Benson, who were attending the Supreme Convention in St. Louis, and Floyd and HermaNell Tafelski, who were unable to attend due to health issues.

Beginning seven days before his passing and ending the day before his funeral, the state officers and PSDs participated in a newly compiled Novena for Healing, Grace and Peace, with Emil and his family as the primary beneficiaries of our intense petitions and daily rosary. This special new Knights of Columbus Novena led by State Deputy Douglas Oldmixon invokes the intercession of our Venerable Father McGivney, the seven priests who are Knights and saints – six Mexican martyrs and Bishop Rafael Guizar, and Mary the Mother of God as Our Lady of Guadalupe, one per day for nine days.

Those of us who were blessed by knowing Emil, Clementine, and their beautiful family know that their influence has helped each of us to live better lives as Christians and Catholics. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
