Border Mass held on the Rio Grande

By Joseph R. Grillo Diocesan Deputy

Vol. 4, 2016-2017

The El Paso Diocese of the Knights of Columbus were able to help and be involved with the Border Mass held on the Rio Grande and also present the Silver Rose to Cd Juarez. The Mass usually takes place at the border with an altar on each side and a fence dividing the two countries.

This year Bishop Mike j. Seitz was able to get permission to do the Mass in the middle of a section of the Rio Grande that was not flooded yet. A wooden platform created to bridge both sides of the border so the altar could be in the middle of the Rio Grande connecting both countries.

Three Bishops from Las Cruces, N.M, Cd. Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, TX. were able to hold Mass for the first time on the line that divides the United States and Mexico.

After the Mass, the Knights of Columbus El Paso handed the Silver Rose to Bishop Seitz who walked it over to the middle of the Rio Grande and handed it to the Mexican Delegation.

The mass was limited to 200 from each side that could go down to the altar

and as many as we wanted on the levee on each side of the border.

Estimated crowd by the news was over 1000 people.

I would also thank the Knights on Bikes and the New Mexico Knights of Columbus for helping us obtain the Silver Rose a couple of days early so this event could take place. This shows the great unity the Knights of Columbus has.

Attached are some photos and the video of Bishop Seitz ‘’walking on water ‘’as he presents the Silver Rose to the Mexico Delegation.

Vivat Jesus! Viva Cristo Rey!
