Military Thanksgiving Meal

By Felix Villarreal, Grand Knight Council 11599, St Rose of Lima San Antonio

Vol. 4, 2016-2017

One Saturday night while working at the Parish Hall Snack Bar during a Quinceanera event (a celebration of a girl's 15th birthday) for the council, Brother Joseph David Estes, mentioned to his fellow Brother Knights, “you know guys, wouldn’t it be nice if our council could host a Thanksgiving meal for our military in appreciation for their service?”.Even though Brother Joseph did not get to see his dream become reality, the council for the past five years has put together such an event.

Past Grand Knight, SK Joseph Estes, served in the military and knew that during the holidays many service members are away from home, some for the first time and do miss a home cooked meal. Brother Joseph participated in Operation Home Cooking, where trainees are allowed to visit area families for some home cooking. After a few years the council decided to establish an annual military Thanksgiving dinner and named it in his honor, “The Joseph David Estes Annual Military Appreciation Dinner”, with a television, video game system and recliner rooms for their relaxation.

The St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Council 11599 of San Antonio Texas, has hosted five such events from forty to seventy five Technical Training military trainees, friends and families from Fort Sam Houston Joint Base Texas and Lackland Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. Thank you Brother Knights for sharing with the community.
