By Jim O’Brien

Vol. 4, 2016-2017

Flag2

Guest of Honor: Frank E. Hughes

Knights of Columbus Assembly 2517 of Humble, TX held a U.S. flag retirement ceremony on March 21, 2018. It was held in front of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School flag pole. During the ceremony, the old flag was taken down while taps were played in the background. That flag was then ceremoniously retired and placed in a burning caldron. Some of the ashes from that will be used during the next flag retirement as a continuing honor of the flag. The student body was in attendance as full respect was paid to the flag.

A special guest of honor was in attendance, Frank E. Hughes, retired NASA Chief of Space Flight Training. He was an active part of the training of astronauts in the NASA facility in Clear Lake, TX and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Assembly consists of several regional Councils and is considered a patriotic organization.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic lay organization. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Church, their communities, families and young people. With more than 1.8 million members in over 15,000 councils around the world, the Knights of Columbus annually donates more than $175 million dollars and over 73 million hours of service to charitable causes.
