11862 Wheelchair Sunday Drive

By SK Mike Courtney Texas State Council - Education Content Chairman

Vol. 4, 2016-2017

Council 11862 ran a successful Wheelchair Sunday Drive the weekends of March 9,10and March 16,17. Thanks to the generosity of the parishioners of the St. Michael the Archangel, donations were close to $19K, enough to purchase 127 New Wheelchairs! The Wheelchairs will be sent to the CRIT Center in Guererro Mexico where according to American Wheelchair President Chris Lewis, there is a desperate need for mobility!

A special thanks to Fr. Joseph Mehan, Pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Garland and Chaplain of Council 11862 for his support of this ministry as well as ALL his support of the efforts by the Knights of Columbus! Thanks also to SK Bill Weber for his direction and leadership during this drive. This event was directed by SK Mike Courtney FDD and PGK of Council 11862.

Council 11862 has been supporting the American Wheelchair Mission for a long time though the Shoe Bin Program. Bins are placed in the Church Hall and parishioners are asked to drop off slightly worn shoes. Shoes are collected by World Wear Project of Dallas and the Council is paid $0.55 per pound for all wearable shoes. All funds collected are sent directly to the American Wheelchair Mission! For the 2018/19 Fraternal Year, this effort has raised over $700, enough for an additional 5 wheelchairs! If your council is interested in a program similar to this, please feel free to contact Mike Courtney at mike.courtney@reclaimedtextiles.com.

Thanks to all the members of Council 11862 for their help in this mission as well as the Parish of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.
