By Thomas Oaks, Palm City Council 8298 Program Director

Vol. 4, 2016-2017

On Sunday 2 June 2019, Monsignor Louis Brum celebrated Mass on the occasion of his retirement from active ministry.Joining him on the Altar were Most Reverend Daniel Flores, Bishop; Most Reverend Mario Aviles, Auxiliary Bishop; and Most Reverend Reymundo Pe, Bishop Emeritus, all from the Diocese of Brownsville.Numerous Ministries of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen were involved in the Mass and the dinner which followed.Members of the Humberto Cardinal Medeiros Assembly 2851 provided the Honor Guard for the Mass as well as the Color Guard for the posting of the Colors at dinner. And members of Palm City Council 8298 helped coordinate the dinner reception held in Monsignor Louis’ honor after the Mass.

During the Offertory, Marietta Martinez, the wife of Past State Deputy and Supreme Director Javier Martinez, brought the celebrant’s chalice as part of the presentation of the Eucharistic gifts to Monsignor Louis. She accompanied members of Monsignor Louis’ family in the Offertory Procession. The chalice, as explained later in the evening to the dinner attendees, was presented as a gift from the Martinez family to Monsignor Louis. This same chalice had previously been presented to Marietta in honor of Javier by his Assembly, Bishop John L. Morkovsky Assembly 2243 of Sugarland.Monsignor Louis was very surprised and humbled by Marietta’s generous gift.Witnessing the presentation was Marietta’s mother, Mary Chavez, who traveled with her to McAllen for the Mass and dinner.

Monsignor Louis served as Council Chaplain for the Palm City Council for 15 years. He also served twice as Associate State Chaplain; for PSD Kenneth Otte during 2002-2004 and then for PSD and current Supreme Director Terry Simonton during 2014-2016.
