As part of the Leave No Neighbor Behind initiative, Rev. John T. Weyer Council #11343 in Sugar Land, TX organized a parish curbside food drive for St. Laurence Church Social Concerns Ministry in late April. The Knights offered to help collect food items when Social Concerns emergency food pantry for local parishioners in need was low and nearly empty. Knights collected the food items and donations from the trunks of vehicles as they delivered non-perishable food items. Eighty-two donors delivered approximately 2,000 pounds of food in two hours. Over 125 bags, boxes and cans of food were collected. Monetary donations were also collected totaling nearly $5,800.00. As donors delivered curbside, they were greeted and blessed by our Parochial Vicar Fr. Truong Son Nguyen. The pantry was successfully re-stocked for families.

Two weeks later, the council scheduled and collected food at a second curbside food drive. This time the beneficiary was the Mamie George Community Center food pantry. The Mamie George Community Center serves as a hub for Catholic Charities services in Fort Bend County. The center addresses many of the community’s needs, with an emphasis on low-income residents and seniors. Due to COVID-19, the center has been serving over 1,000 families a week and were in need of help. The Knights collected approximately 3,959 pounds of food from 96 generous donors. Hundreds of bags, boxes and cans of food were collected. Monetary donations were also collected totaling $500. Donors were greeted a second time from St. Laurence Parochial Vicars Fr. Truong Son Nguyen and Fr. Jaison Thomas. A 20ft. truck was successfully loaded with hundreds of non-perishable food.

Thank you to all the generous donors for making these food drives a success!
