Holy Smokers of Council 11862 Prepare Huge Super Bowl BBQ Feast

The Holy Smokers of Council 11862, St. Michael the Archangel parish in Garland, held their annual Super Bowl BBQ sale, using four smokers to cook 400 pounds of brisket, 150 pounds of ribs, 100 pounds of sausage, and 120 half-chickens. Preparation started Friday night, February 5, with the arrival of the smokers. Cooking began at 4 am on Saturday to fill over 110 pre-orders placed by St. Michael's parishioners and other lovers of fine barbecue. Proceeds from the sales of barbecue support the Council's charities, which this year include survivors of the December 26, 2015 EF-4 tornado that ravaged Garland, Rowlett, Copeville, Sunnyvale, and other communities in North Texas.

In addition to the pre-orders, the Knights also provided free BBQ meals to 24 families that were directly affected by the tornado. The annual Super Bowl BBQ sale is one of the Council's most popular fund-raising activities, and it also promotes the Order's principles of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. A team of at least 36 Brother Knights worked in relays of up to 20 men, led by Sir Knights Ronnie Waldie and Matt Rosales, for a total of over 500 volunteer hours during the effort.
