A Conversation

I was talking with a Brother Knight a couple of days ago about starting a recruitment drive. He turned to me in anger and spouted; “All you guys, State and Supreme think about is Insurance and Numbers!” I was a bit surprised at first then I replied:” Darn right! All I do think about is Insurance and numbers and here is why!”

Father McGivney didn’t take those men into the basement of St. Mary’s Church to play dominoes or to play cards. He took them there to Insure that the widows and orphansof fallen members of his parish would be taken care of just as you should be for the women and children of this parish. You have to be a Knight to buy our Insurance!

Numbers! How many years do you have invested in this council. Look around at the next meeting and see how many people can fill the ranks in five orten years. Our F.S. is pushing 80, I myself am closing in on 75, two others Korean Vets already in their 80s. and so many others and how about you mister spring chicken? If we don’t recruit our Council will die. Do you know that over 60 Councils in Texas are in Suspension? They didn’t recruit, no leadership and there was no one to move into the ranks. They had no future. Do you want this for our Council?

He looked at me sadly for a moment took my hand and ask when do we start. I replied: How about now.
