30th Annual Knights of Columbus Scholarships: The Winners

For the 30th year, Council 9884 has honored five Catholic seniors from Lewisville area high schools. Applicants presented their participation in school and church activities and wrote an essay on the topic of “The Need to Serve.” The five 2020 graduates, winners of $800 cash scholarships:

Naomi Apodaca.The daughter of Danny and Nellie Apodaca, Naomi was an active member of the Lewisville High School "Band That Marches with Pride" as well as doing numerous volunteer activities through the LHS Student Council, the Circle of Friends, LISD Breakfast Buddies, AVID, and Journey to Dream.At St. Philip's, Naomi has volunteered since middle school.She served as a Communities in Schools summer camp aide, STEM Camp Invention summer aide, a Vacation Bible School aide, St. Philip Choir camp leader, an altar server, a Discipleship group member, a SPY (St. Philip's Youth) member, a SPY summer mission participant, and has delivered Giving Tree baskets, as well as participating in several Pro-Life activities and retreats.Her current plans are to attend North Central Texas College in the fall.

Lindsey Collins.The daughter of John and Lesa Collins, Lindsey was a squad leader for the Marcus High School Marching Band and Wind Ensemble.She was a member of the Math Honor Society and the Music Honor Society, has volunteered through the Lewisville Hearts for Homes program and the Keep Lewisville Beautiful campaign.As a member of the Girl Scouts, she has been awarded Bronze, Silver, and Gold Service Awards for her recycling, hospital, and beautification projects.At St. Philip's, Lindsey participated in SPY, a spring high school retreat, and volunteered with the rosary-making group.She is deciding among a number of Texas universities.

Chelsea Heredia.The daughter of Cedric and Linda Heredia—and the twin sister of another one of this year's winners, Chelsea marched in the Flower Mound High School band that earned trips to the Grand Nationals in Indianapolis in 2017 and the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena in 2019.At FMHS she was a Kindness Ambassador, a member of the Math, Science, and National Honor Societies, the PSAT Team, the Catholic Teens of Flower Mound Club, the Globally Green Club, and a math tutor.She has been a NASA Aerospace Scholar and a volunteer for the Lewisville Lake Symphony.Over the past five years, she has played piano for a total of nearly 400 hours at local retirement homes and assisted living centers.At St. Philip's she has served as a Vacation Bible School aide, an altar server, a Discipleship group member, and, as a SPY member, has participated in several activities and retreats.Both the Obama and Trump administrations have awarded her the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.Chelsea has been accepted to the University of Texas at Dallas.
