For the fifth year, Council 8293, St. Justin Martyr Parish, Houston, TX, celebrated KC Family Week,
Aug. 9 – 15, 2020. With the guidance of GK Joshua Alderete and Pastor & Chaplain, Father Paul Chovanec,
The Council sponsored a family-related event each day of the week.
- On Sunday, Aug. 9th, the Council sponsored a food drive to help the families that appeal to the parish Social Ministry for assistance.
- Every day, Monday – Friday, the 9 a.m. Mass, celebrated live and live-streamed) included prayers for the needs of modern families.
- Every day at noon, brother Knight and Deacon Corney Llorens live-streamed the “Angelus Moment,” which included the Saint of the Day and a reflection on the Gospel of the feast.
- On Wednesday, Knights assisted with the distribution of food at the parish Social Ministry Building, 10 a.m. –12 noon.
Every night there was a family-related program also live-streamed to Knights’ families, parishioners and friends.
- Monday night, the parish Scout Troop 620 and Cub Scout Pack 627 presented a program abut Family Camping.
- On Tuesday night, brother Knight & Deacon Candidate Son Nguyen and his wife Karen presented a program called “Praying Vespers as a Family,” with the help of their daughter Emily and their son, a new brother Knight, Matthew.
- *On Wednesday, Aug. 12th (Bl. Michael McGivney’s Birthday), the Council, together with parish CCE, presented the Family Rosary outdoors in “Mary’s Garden,” with the Silver Rose present, with Columbian Squires who started the ‘Running of the Rose” back in the 1960’s, and with Fourth Degree Sir Knights forming an Honor Guard for the silver Rose.
- *On Thursday, brother Knight Cesar Galvan, together with his wife Perla and daughters Mariana and Juliana presented a bilingual cooking show called ‘Cocinando con la Familia Galvan / Cooking with the Galvan Family” with shared Faith, live music, good humor, and some delicious food.
- *On Friday evening, Aug. 14 (the anniversary of Bl. Michael McGivney’s death) brother Knight Michael Robinson presented a fascinating program called “Fishing as a Family—How to Catch the Big Ones.”
- Finally, on Saturday morning, Aug. 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heave,” the Council attended a multicultural celebration of the Mass with readings and hymns in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
“We look forward to Family Week every Summer,” says Father Paul, “and we’ll try to make the most of this year too.”
