First Annual Texas State Council Exemplification Contest at the Convention

The first annual Texas State Council Exemplification contest was held at the 117^th annual convention held in Houston on Friday April 30^th through Sunday May 2^nd. The idea for this came from our Worthy State Deputy, Brother Alfredo Vela and he asked that we make it happen, and we did. The competition was for the coveted title of “Best in State.”

Preliminary rounds were held, as each team that wanted to participate in the contest was asked to submit a video of their exemplification (English or Spanish) for judging. The exemplifications were judged by a group of Brother Knights based on a weighted scoring up to a possible total of 100 points for Appearance, Organization, Delivery, Transition and Leadership, with Delivery having the highest possible points available of 60.

Videos were submitted by Holy Family Council 9088 in Victoria, St. John Newman Council 9291 in San Antonio, the San Angelo Diocesan team, St. Charles Borromeo 12818 Council in Houston (Spanish speaking team), The El Paso Diocesan team, Council 3008 in Lubbock and the Galveston-Houston Diocesan team. Preliminary judging took place on the weekend of April 17^th and 18^th.

The teams that participated did very well and the winning teams in the preliminary round were St. Charles Borromeo 12818, for their Spanish exemplification, the San Angelo Diocesan team, the El Paso Diocesan team and the Galveston-Houston Diocesan Team.

These teams were invited to participate at the convention in the finals for their quest for Best in State and they all were excellent! Many thanks to our Associate State Chaplain for filling in the Chaplains role in two of the Exemplifications! He was a natural for the part! The winner of the Spanish Best in State award was presented to the team from St. Charles Borromeo Council 12818 in Houston. The winner of the English Best in State went to the Galveston-Houston Diocesan team. These winners and the teams that participated at the convention are shown below.
