2021.4 Smokin Chickens for Charity

By Larry Pfeifer, Texas Knight Reporter

Vol. 4, 2016-2017

It was a very busy weekend for sir knights of Assembly 2570 as they spearhead the first major charity fund raiser of the COVID era for Council 10524 in Athens Texas. The busy weekend started early Saturday with seasoning the chickens, preparation of beans and all the related set-up activities. The kitchen crew was under the supervision of SK David Barrett, SK Larry Pfeifer, with assistance from SK Gabriel Martinez, Richard Dupree and SK Mel Hebert.

The charcoal was lighted at 5 o’clock Sunday morning while the finishing touches were completed in the kitchen including the addition of the secret ingredients to the beans and coleslaw. The pit masters SK Wray Morris and SK Freddy Hancock kept turning out the tasty chicken halves cooked to perfection with assistance from SK’s Tom Calderon and Fermin Garcia. Wray and Freddy are pictured below as they take off the last batch of chicken halves. When the work was finished around 2 P M that afternoon, over six hundred and seventy chicken dinners had been prepared. Pictured below, SK’s Bob Garrett and John Sumpter wait for the last few meals to be picked up by community members. In addition to community members who purchased meals, members of the local police department and fire department had a few meals delivered to those on duty that day.

The funds raised during this event allow the council to continue supporting their many charity activities. The knights wanted the community to know how many activities are supported through the grilled chicken dinner fund raiser and prominently displayed the council program activity board where it could easily be seen by all while they were picking up their dinners to go. Program Display board displayed pictured below. The knights also reminded all to Keep Christ in Christmas.
