Sam Szalwinski was a remarkable figure whose dedication and service left a lasting impact on countless lives. Born in Hobson, Texas, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952, serving with honor for 30 years and achieving the rank of Colonel. On February 7, 1953, he married Beverly, his steadfast partner with whom he raised seven children, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren—a family legacy that continues to grow.

Beyond his military career, Sam was a mentor to many, offering guidance to young people well into his retirement. He was a devoted member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas, where he served the community faithfully for over XX years.

Sam joined the Knights of Columbus Council #7613 in 1985, where he held numerous leadership roles, including Grand Knight, District Deputy, and Diocesan Deputy. In 1998, he committed himself to Habitat for Humanity, organizing annual builds, recruiting volunteers, and leading fundraising efforts. Over 26 years, Sam’s leadership brought 27 homes to life for families in need, with only one pause during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After retiring from his Habitat ministry, Sam turned his focus to the American Wheelchair Mission. In just XX years, he raised $XXX from his parish, archdiocese, and State Council, providing over XXX wheelchairs to underserved mobility-impaired individuals across south Texas, Alabama, Mexico, VA hospitals, and clergy retirement centers—an effort that contributed 6,500 wheelchairs this year alone. “It’s not about me,” he often said, reflecting on the success of his initiatives. “It’s about the amazing generosity of people.”

When Sam declared, “We are going to do this,” everyone around him responded with a resounding, “Yes, Sir!” His leadership and compassion will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
