By Katlyn Steffen (Vice Principal, St Ignatius Martyr Catholic School, Austin, TX) Eric Staveley (Grand Knight, Knights of Columbus, Fr. Gene Doré Council #10131, Austin, TX)

Vol. 2, 2024 - 2025

St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic School, a Holy Cross K-8 School in Austin, Texas, recently received a generous donation from the local Knights of Columbus Council (Fr Gene Doré) #10131, allowing the school to purchase essential supplies for safety backpacks in every classroom. The donation has enabled the school to equip each classroom with a comprehensive safety backpack, designed to be ready for any emergency situation.

Each backpack is thoughtfully packed with a range of critical supplies, including tourniquets, blankets, CPR masks, and other essential items. These supplies ensure that teachers and staff are prepared to respond quickly and effectively to a variety of emergency scenarios, enhancing the safety and well-being of all students.

The school community at St. Ignatius Martyr is profoundly grateful for the Knights of Columbus' support. As a gesture of appreciation, the school has proudly affixed Knights of Columbus patches to the front of each safety backpack, symbolizing the partnership between the school and the local Council. The patches serve as a visible reminder of the Knights’ commitment to the safety and welfare of the students and staff.

The Knights of Columbus, known for their dedication to charitable works and support for Catholic education, have once again demonstrated their commitment to serving the community. Their contribution to St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic School not only provides tangible safety resources but also strengthens the bond between the school and the local council. "We made this happen through the extraordinary effort from our Council members to reduce costs in our fundraisers; thus funding this unforeseen school expense, perfectly demonstrating all three principles of our Order: charity, unity, and fraternity", says Grand Knight of Council #10131, Eric Staveley.

As the new school year begins, the safety backpacks will stand ready in each classroom, a testament to the generosity and care of the Knights of Columbus. The entire St. Ignatius Martyr community extends its heartfelt thanks to the Knights, knowing that their donation has made a significant impact on the school’s ability to keep its students safe.
